Setting up Shop Floor (1): technical

Getting started with the Shop Floor? Before you can start clocking in hours on a terminal, a lot needs to be installed and set up. In addition to the technical and functional setup, there are plenty of opportunities to customize the Shop Floor to your liking. This is the first part of a series of articles on setting up the Shop Floor.

 

 

To carry out the technical setup of the Shop Floor, you basically only need 2 components: an MKG environment where the API runs and an installed Smart Client. Use the step-by-step plan to take the first steps towards a working Shop Floor.

 

 

Step 1: Ensure a working API

 

You need to have an up-to-date MKG environment. If this environment is not a cloud environment and there is no API running yet, you will first need to ensure a working API. The installation is usually done in consultation with the system administrator and/or an external IT partner. Also, check out the How to import an SSL certificate manual.

 

 

Step 2: Install the Smart Client

 

To start the Shop Floor on a terminal, you need the MKG Smart Client. By completing its installation, a shortcut will be placed on your desktop, allowing you to start the Smart Client. Refer to the installation guide MKG Smart Client installation.

 

 

Step 3: Configure the Smart Client for the API

 

Now, start the Smart Client. You will reach the login screen. Choose Open Settings on the right side of the screen to be able to customize the Smart Client to the environment it should run on.

Then, enter the settings for the API. The fields are mandatory:

  • Hostname: API server name
  • Port number: API port number (this port is used by the API to connect to the database)
  • API key: API key (this key is located under the QR code)

 

Please note!
You can find the required data for the three mandatory fields in the top right corner of MKG under Help using the 'MKG API' option. This option is only available when logged in to MKG as a user with the 'Administrator' property.

 

Now open 'Advanced settings'. The following settings are recommended:

  • Root path: this field is automatically filled with "/mkgbridge"
  • Use SSL = ON
  • Stay logged in = ON (after logging out, you don't have to re-enter the login details of the 'shopfloor' user the next time you log in)
  • Shopfloor kiosk mode = ON (the Shop Floor will be displayed full screen on the terminal and won't have the option to close or minimize the screen)

Click Save. The technical setup is now completed. But before you can log in to the Smart Client, the functional setup needs to be done first. Refer to the article Setting up Shop Floor (2): functional.
