Working as a Software Engineer at MKG

“Sitting behind the computer all day by yourself; that's what many people think of when they hear about a software engineer. But fortunately, it's much more than that! In the development team, we collaborate a lot, and the work is varied and versatile.

Ingeborg Bikker

The majority of my work involves resolving unwanted situations in the software and creating new functionalities. Currently, I am mainly focused on building components for MKG5 that already existed in MKG004 and making the software translatable into English and German. Additionally, I work on documenting the 'toolbox' for us as software engineers, so that for a new solution, we can quickly and clearly find out which options are available. This also helps new software engineers to be properly onboarded.

The software engineers in our team have diverse backgrounds. Some have studied Computer Science, while others come from the Support department or were previously (reporting) consultants, system administrators, or business managers. I myself wanted to learn programming better after studying Applied Mathematics. Thus, we all have our own contributions and can learn a lot from each other.

What I enjoy about this work is the puzzle of solving a problem. Sometimes you do this alone, but often in consultation with others who have certain experience or knowledge. It is satisfying when you have built a well-functioning piece of software, and to see your efforts reflected in the next delivered version. When you also hear that a customer is happy with it, you know for sure that you have a great job and are not 'sitting boringly and alone behind your computer all day'! ”
